NFL - No Reality Checks Here

without comments

With all the legal problems that are surfacing in the NFL this off-season, you’d think a player retiring would have done come and gone from the news headlines; but then again, when has the NFL career Interceptions record holder ever not made headlines? And that fact may have been a good thing for a player, if he weren’t a quarterback. I am, of course, speaking of the infamous Brett Favre, and the latest rumors that he might be back on the field for the start of training camp later this month.

It’s no secret that Favre has a lot of heart, if you’ve ever watched him play, then you know how much “want to” he has in him; he is one of the most competitive guys in any locker room year in, and year out. He now has more than a full decade of playing time, starting nearly every game, if not all, in each of those years. When the rumors started flying around that he was retiring at the end of the 2006 season, everyone seemed to be in disbelief.

Then he came back for 2007, led the Packers to one of their best performances in several years, all while demonstrating that he still has everything it takes to play, and made his retirement official at the end of the year. But now it seems to be Favre who is in disbelief, as there have been several reports that he has been throwing balls, and working out while maintaining what appears to be his own little off-season conditioning program. So the question begs to be asked, what is he doing all that work for after retiring?

The word around Green Bay, and the folks close to Favre, is that he is feeling the familiar itch once again; news that seems to be making the Packers management consider their options should Favre un-retire. It has been dubbed the “Rodgers Era” and it is standing in the way of Favre’s potential comeback, or is it?

Just how strongly do the Packers feel about Aaron Rodgers? If faced with bringing their brightest star back into the locker room, would they tell Rodgers to wait a little longer? Or would they simply tell Farve no? Apparently, that is the question that needs to be answered, and fast considering that one coaches’ assessment of Favre’s return, at around an 80% chance, is looking to be a conservative estimate.

All I know is that should the Pack decide to move on from Favre, just as the 49′ers did on Montana so many years ago, then he too would have an endless supply of offers coming from other teams in desperate need of landing a player of his caliber. It doesn’t even matter how old he is for some teams, even catching the a ride on the coattails of his career would be enough to get their program going in the right direction.

I guess Favre is planning on putting his reality check off for another year.
