Here we go again. As of Friday afternoon, nfl.com is reporting that Brett Favre has contacted the Green Bay Packers to let them know that he is planning to report to training camp, something no one quite expected. He has said that he will submit his reinstatement papers to the NFL, possibly as early as Friday, so that he can attend the camp, which begins on Saturday.

The biggest problems lay with the Packers management as they have already decided that Aaron Rodgers will be their starting quarterback. Now that’s not to say that Brett can’t challenge Rodgers for his spot, or even win the spot from Rodgers, but he’s going to have to do it with his performance, and without any help from his reputation.

The Packers have been talking with two NFL teams about trading Brett Favre, and they have even given one team permission to speak with Favre about a trade, the New York Jets. The other team showing lots of interest in Favre is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys begin their training camp on Friday afternoon in Oxnard, California. As of Thursday, their two top draft picks, Felix Jones and Mike Jenkins, were not in California with their teammates when the charter jet landed. That makes three contract issues affecting the start of camp, though team management is hopeful that it’ll be worked out by the first practice.

Terry Glenn has also not reached a deal with the Cowboys regarding the split contract; just as it looks like the two first round picks are holding out for more money in their contracts. Jerry Jones says it’s not a problem, since most of the picks drafted around those two players have not signed their contracts either, but the distractions have got to be an issue considering the roles these two players will have when the season begins.

In Nascar news, Tony Stewart chose this weekend at Indianapolis to unveil his new ride in 2009, and it’s a Chevy. Stewart had only driven Chevy’s in Nascar up until the start of the 2008 season when JGR switched to Toyota’s, meanwhile he has maintained the bowtie brigade throughout all of the cars that he owns in other series.

His new ride follows the latest trends in sponsorships by having two primary sponsors, and according to Stewart both make sense. Old Spice, his longtime sponsor in the former Busch series, now titled the Nationwide series, as agreed to come on with the newly formed Stewart-Haas racing along side Office Depot.

It’s a step back into the old days looking at the car, and given that Tony is one of the most successful open wheel transfers into Nascar, along side A.J. Foyt, he has appropriately chosen the number 14 for his new ride.

Old Spice is entering its tenth year of sponsorship with Stewart, and as he takes on the dual roles of owner and driver, they are giving something back to Stewart. The former Haas-CNC racing has been struggling since its inception to maintain either quality drivers or quality sponsors. Now that Stewart has bought a 50% stake in the company, they have the quality driver they need to properly imagine ever reaching victory lane.

Old Spice, the number one antiperspirant brand in the U.S., thanks in large part to its partnership with Stewart over the years, is offering some hard earned money to help take care of the other problem, quality sponsorship. Respectively, Office Depot is also the leader in its field, and together, coupled with Tony Stewart’s return to Chevrolet, Stewart-Haas racing has some big plans for 2009, and quite possibly even bigger expectations.

Update: Just a small update to this post. As of Friday evening the Cowboys have released Terry Glenn in order to make room for the younger receivers on the team. Jerry Jones announced his decision during an afternoon press conference.

Glenn did agree to the terms of the split contract, but I guess waiting so long to do so gave the Cowboys ample time to evaluate his role on the team, and eventually came back to bite him in the butt. There was reason to believe that another deal could be reached with Glenn before the start of the season, if Jerry Jones should feel he can contribute to the team’s needs at the time.

Oh yes, and it should make for a pretty decent team talent wise. But something that worries me about the whole deal, I remember when Ricky Rudd was an owner/driver, he was fairly hot before that and then went downhill. Many speculated that it was because of the extra workload keeping him from focusing on race day.

Stewart has now gone over a year since his last victory, and I can only wonder if the Smoke hasn’t been settled on the track by his extra activities off the track. Ryan Newman should help his team compete while he gets his ducks in a row, so to speak.
