Nutmeg Poisoning, Because of a Typo? »

A Swedish food magazine that posts around 1,200 recipes a year noticed a typo in all copies of an issue in a recipe for an apple cake. The recipe, according to the Chief Editor of the magazine, called for two pinches of nutmeg, but was printed both online and in store sold copies as 20 nutmeg nuts. Once the typo was spotted, the website sent out letters to it’s 50,000 subscribers about the typo, and placed leaflets in the store copies. The fear is that nutmeg can be poisonous at such high levels.

The logic behind the magazine’s actions was based on two things, 1) that much nutmeg would cause an extremely bitter taste that would likely prevent anyone from ever eating it, and 2) because that much nutmeg isn’t that easy to come by. Boy, were they wrong? Someone did make it as directed in the flawed version, and four people ate from it, all of which suffered from nutmeg poisoning right afterward. The magazine, Matmagasinet, promptly recalled all of the store copies after learning of this.

Dallas Cowboys Finish Preseason 2-2, Lose Hurd, Get Adam Jones »

The ‘Boys won their final preseason match-up against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night, 16-10 with no starters playing on either side of the ball. Sadly though, there was one player who is as close to a starter as you get without being one, WR Sam Hurd did start the game as the starting wide out, and while he was only expected to play a series, maybe two, his playing time ended unexpectedly.

Dallas Cowboys Wide ReceiverEarly in the first quarter, as he took an end around touch from third string QB Richard Bartel, a run that he broke for more than 30 yards before being brought down. When he was tackled from behind though, his ankle suffered what is believed to be a high ankle sprain, though the X-ray done during the game was inconclusive, so another scan is scheduled for tomorrow.

This is a particularly tough blow for the Cowboys Wide Receiver corps since Isaiah Stanback (shoulder) and Miles Austin (knee) were already injured. Hurd was expected to be the saving grace as the third receiver behind starters Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton, but once Hurd went down, the Cowboys immediately looked to the “down the line” guys to step up and make an impression.

Dallas Cowboys CornerbackThe biggest story out of Dallas on Thursday though came before the game did, and from a player that didn’t even wear pads during the game. Adam “Pacman” Jones received word from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that he had been granted a full reinstatement to the NFL for the 2008 season. This is good news for the Cowboys as Jones is an experienced CB that has seemed to shake his rust off pretty good, and will serve well as both a punt, and possibly kick, returner, and the nickel back on the field Terrence Newman and Anthony Henry.

Merriman and His Knee »

San Diego Chargers LinebackerShawne Merriman has announced that he will not have surgery on his knee right now, and will instead be ready to play in the teams season opener next week. It has been reported that while he was visiting several doctors around the country to make a decision on his knee this year, he didn’t stop until he heard the advice that he wanted to hear.

He wanted to play this year, despite the serious concern for his career and safety. I, for one, wish him the best of luck, and I won’t be surprised if, and when, this decision backfires on him.
